The Thayer Symphony Orchestra was founded 36 years ago by Dr. Jon Robertson as the Thayer Conservatory Orchestra. From its inception, its has functioned as a community orchestra providing professional, community volunteer and student musicians the opportunity to make music together. Sixty percent of its musicians are professionals, thirty percent are community volunteers and ten percent are college level music students.
In 1983, Maestro Toshimasa Francis Wada was invited to become Music Director. Under his direction, every aspect of the organization has been expanded - the number of musicians, the support and participation of community leaders and the development of our audience. Maestro Wada is leading the orchestra into the 36th concert season with great vision, expertise and a genuine belief in music.
Orchestra Spot       The mission of the Thayer Symphony Orchestra is to develop and sustain a symphony orchestra of the highest quality for the education, enrichment, and pleasure of the citizens and musicians of Central Massachusetts. Our orchestra is an independent cultural organization that does not receive major support from any one institution. It is governed by a Board of Trustees reflecting many communities within our region. The orchestra has a volunteer auxiliary, the Friends of Thayer Symphony Orchestra, who assist in fund raising activities and day-to-day operations.
In addition to the subscription series of six concerts, the orchestra presents a community concert program called Youth at the Pops, held the Fourth of July in Fitchburg, MA. Free tickets are provided through area business sponsors and community agencies, so that young families not usually exposed to classical music can enjoy the concert. Since its inception ten years ago, the audience for this event has grown from 1,000 to over 10,000 Central Massachusetts residents.
The orchestra is in demand to perform at many special events. Past appearances have included: the Clinton Town Hall restoration; the St. Vincent's Hospital Guild Benefit Concert at Mechanics Hall; the Grand Opening of the National Plastics Center and Museum in Leominster; and performances with soprano Aprile Millo at Boston's Symphony Hall and Worchester's Mechanics Hall to benefit St. Bernard's Central Catholic High School in Fitchburg.
Music education for community youth continues to be a major focus. In partnership with Fleet, Bovenzi, Inc., the George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation, the Greater Worchester Community Foundation, the Norton Company Foundation and Victory Super Markets, we have been able to develop our highly regarded Music Connection, program in elementary schools throughout our region and expand the offerings of our Family Rehearsal Program.
The Thayer Symphony Orchestra has provided cultural enrichment to this region for 36 years. We remain deeply committed to enhancing the quality of life in those communities we serve. We are proud to be your community orchestra!
